Wine is a highly coveted alcoholic beverage. It is even present in the French tourism sector with the presence of wine tourism on the territory.

Key figures of today’s market

Main wine producers in 2021:

World wine production during 2021 is 250.3 million hectolitres. This production is extremely low compared to recent years. This decrease in production is explained by the weather conditions experienced by the three main European producers.

The world leader in the wine sector is the European continent and more particularly Western Europe.

1st: Italy → 44.5 million hectolitres

2nd: Spain → 35 million hectolitres

3rd: France → 34.2 million hectolitres

The figures are mixed. The three main European producing countries alone account for 45% of world production. Nevertheless, its figures are lower than in recent years.

Its figures published by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) show us the damage of the year 2021. Indeed, the figures have never been so low for France since 1957 for example. Global warming is the cause of this low figure due to frosts, hail, and storms last April.

The wine export market in 2019:

1st: France → 33% of exports → 9.5 billion euros

2nd: Italy → 21% of exports → 6 billion euros

3rd: Spain → 11% of exports → 3.2 billion euros.

The Vine and Wine Organisation has not published the figures for 2020 and 2021. We will therefore give you an overview of the situation in 2019. France’s leading position is explained by the reputation of its wines.

Indeed, they are referenced in 90% of the offers of global wine operators. The most popular French wines are Bordeaux, Languedoc and Côtes du Rhône.

By way of comparison, it should be noted that in the year 2020, France obtained a revenue of 8.74 billion euros for its wine exports. This significant drop is explained by the sanitary crisis that we have gone through. Indeed, during this crisis, the world economy slowed down. Exports were reduced or even virtually stopped due to the low number of ships available. In addition, its exports were considerably reduced due to the drop in consumption with the closure of bars and restaurants.

1st: USA → 14% of wine consumed → 35 million hectolitres

2nd: France → 12% of wine consumed → 30 million hectolitres

3rd: Italy → 10% of wines consumed → 25 million hectolitres

In 2021, nearly 250 million hectolitres were consumed worldwide. France is in second place, which shows the attachment of its population to national know-how.

The global wine market of tomorrow

The wine market of tomorrow is mixed, with the organic wine market becoming more and more present in the world. On the other hand, the market is threatened by increasing import taxes in many countries.

As far as the organic wine market is concerned, Spain and Italy are the biggest producers of organic wine. France is in third place with almost 100,000 hectares of certified organic vineyards. This increase is reinforced by the “consume less but better” trend. It should be noted that the organic wine market is growing all over the world except in Asia.

The appearance of legislation in various wine consuming countries such as the United States and China does not bode well for the future of this market. Indeed, this would lead to the loss of a growth market for the main wine producers, which would leave them with many unsold products.

Will we be able to talk about intra-European exports in the future? Only time will tell us.

Spotlight on China

Let’s talk about the example of China, which is a major wine-importing country that has been growing rapidly in recent years. Its development is threatened by the entry into force of a new customs regulation.

Indeed, China has introduced new laws to increase taxation on food and beverage imports into the country.

Australian wine imports were subject to significant surcharges ranging from 107% to 212%. This taxation led to a significant drop in wine imports into the country.
